Israeli President Isaac Herzog has recognized the officially confirmed results of the recent parliamentary election as legally binding. The recognition took place on Wednesday, one week after the vote. This clears the formal way for the next step in the country's political reorganization.

Herzog has now begun talks with representatives of the parties. The aim of these consultations is the formation of a new government. In Israel, the president is a central figure in this process: he leads the talks with the factions represented in parliament and, on that basis, decides which lawmaker to tasks with forming the government.

It is currently unclear how the coalition negotiations will turn out. The name of the future prime minister is also not yet determined. The parties must first clarify which alliances are possible before a stable majority in parliament can emerge.

The head of state's recognition of the election results is a formal but important step. It marks the transition from the election to government formation and sets in motion the political timetable to which parties, voters and the public must now adjust.
