Jonathan McReynolds Says Mother and Grandmother Inspired New Single «Echo»
Gospel singer Jonathan McReynolds has revealed that his latest single, «Echo», was inspired by the prayers of his mother and grandmother. In a radio interview, he also discussed his live album «Closer» and an upcoming cruise performance.
Gospel singer and songwriter Jonathan McReynolds has said that his mother and grandmother were the driving inspiration behind his latest single, «Echo». The multi-award-winning artist made the comments during a recent appearance on the radio programme «Get Up Mornings», where he spoke with hosts Erica Campbell and Mr. Griff about the song and the spiritual foundation that shaped it.
When Campbell asked whose prayers had inspired him to write «Echo», McReynolds pointed immediately to the two women. «My mother's prayers», he said, recalling how he would watch her kneel beside her bed every night to pray. His grandmother also left a deep impression on him through her habit of rising early to read, study and pray. Those memories, he explained, became the foundation for «Echo» and its message about the prayers spoken over a person's life.
The conversation also turned to McReynolds's latest album, «Closer», which was recorded live in his hometown of Chicago. The project blends elements of 1980s music, pop, acoustic soul and worship, and features several notable collaborators. McReynolds described the recording experience as «a movie», saying it was special to have friends and fellow artists present to support the project. Among those who took part were Tasha Cobbs, Tim Bowman and Jamal Roberts.
While McReynolds welcomed the positive response to the music, he stressed that his creative goal is not simply to produce something he believes will succeed. «I just make it to be authentic to where I am in that season», he said. Campbell praised that honesty, particularly the vulnerability he brings to his music and public conversations. Mr. Griff also commended McReynolds for his acceptance speech at the Stellar Awards, where he was named Artist of the Year, telling him that he represented the gospel music community without being harsh.
Looking ahead, McReynolds will join the lineup for the One Voyage Cruise, where he will perform alongside other artists and entertainers. For him, the main attraction is not only the performance but the chance to spend time with people he normally sees only while working. «I just like hanging out with my people, man», he said, explaining that touring schedules often leave little room for genuine connection. Being together in one place allows him to relax, catch up and appreciate those around him.
As for new music, McReynolds said he may begin thinking about it in the coming months. For now, «Echo» offers listeners another glimpse into the experiences and faith that continue to shape his work.
