Jonathan McReynolds Says Mother and Grandmother's Prayers Inspired New Single «Echo»
Gospel singer Jonathan McReynolds has revealed that his latest single, «Echo», was inspired by the nightly prayers of his mother and the morning devotional habits of his grandmother. In a radio interview, he also discussed his live album «Closer», recorded in Chicago, and his upcoming appearance on the One Voyage Cruise.
Gospel singer and songwriter Jonathan McReynolds has said his new single, «Echo», grew out of the prayers he witnessed as a child. In an interview on the radio programme Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell and Mr. Griff, McReynolds explained that the song reflects the spiritual foundation laid by the women who raised him.
When asked whose prayers inspired the track, McReynolds pointed first to his mother. He recalled watching her kneel beside her bed every night to pray, a routine that left a deep impression on him. His grandmother also shaped his understanding of devotion through her habit of rising early to read, study and pray. Those memories, he said, became the bedrock of «Echo», a song about the prayers spoken over a person's life and the way they continue to resonate.
The conversation also touched on McReynolds's latest album, «Closer», which was recorded live in his hometown of Chicago. The project blends elements of 1980s music, pop, acoustic soul and worship, and features contributions from several well-known artists. McReynolds described the recording experience as «a movie», noting how meaningful it was to have friends and fellow musicians present to support the work. Among those who took part were Tasha Cobbs, Tim Bowman and Jamal Roberts.
McReynolds said his creative aim is not simply to produce music that will succeed commercially. «I just make it to be authentic to where I am in that season», he explained. That commitment to honesty was praised by Campbell, who highlighted the vulnerability he brings to both his music and his public conversations. Mr. Griff also commended McReynolds for his acceptance speech at the Stellar Awards, where he was named Artist of the Year, saying he represented the gospel music community with grace and without harshness.
Looking ahead, McReynolds will join the lineup for the One Voyage Cruise, performing alongside other artists and entertainers. For him, the main draw is not only the performance but the chance to spend time with peers he usually encounters only in passing. «I just like hanging out with my people, man», he said, explaining that touring schedules often leave little room for genuine connection. Being together in one place allows him to relax, catch up and appreciate those around him.
As for new music, McReynolds said he may begin thinking about it in the coming months. For now, «Echo» offers listeners another window into the faith and experiences that continue to shape his work.
