Chinese AI model Kimi K3.1 Pro is closing in on Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5

Moonshot AI's new Kimi K3.1 Pro has reached 55 points on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, an 11-point improvement over its predecessor that lifts the Chinese model into fourth place among the systems tracked by the benchmark. Only three models, all from Anthropic and Meta, now rank higher.

The result places Kimi K3.1 Pro within striking distance of Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, the leading proprietary system in the ranking. According to the published figures, the margin separating the top closed models from Moonshot's offering has narrowed sharply, a shift that matters well beyond a single leaderboard position.

The decisive factor is Moonshot's stated plan to release the model's weights. If that release proceeds as announced, the gap between open and proprietary models would shrink to just three points on the index. That would represent one of the smallest measured differences between freely available systems and the best commercial models to date.

Open-weight models can be downloaded and run by outside developers, researchers and companies, who may adapt them to their own purposes without depending on a vendor's interface or terms. Proprietary systems such as Claude Opus 5.5 remain accessible only through their developers' services. A three-point margin would therefore weaken the assumption that the most capable AI systems must remain closed.

The benchmark itself aggregates performance across a range of tasks into a single score, and an 11-point gain in one generation is a substantial step. Kimi K3.1 Pro's fourth-place finish puts it ahead of most competing systems, with only the three Anthropic and Meta models above it. The ranking does not by itself establish how the model performs in specific real-world applications, but it offers a comparable measure across developers.

The development also underscores the growing competitiveness of Chinese AI laboratories. Moonshot AI has now produced a model that, on this index at least, sits close to the frontier defined by established American developers. For organisations weighing which systems to build on, the calculation increasingly involves questions of cost, control and data sovereignty alongside raw capability.

Whether the weights are ultimately published as planned will determine how far that shift extends. A confirmed release would give independent developers direct access to a model performing near the top of the index, intensifying pressure on proprietary providers to justify their advantage. Until then, the 55-point score stands as the clearest signal yet that the distance between open and closed AI is contracting.
