AI Agents Now Run the Allen Telescope Array's Alien Signal Search

The SETI Institute and Breakthrough Listen are using AI agents at the Allen Telescope Array for the first time, to control the telescope and evaluate incoming radio signals. Tasks that previously took weeks are now completed in hours.

At the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array, AI agents now take over control of the telescope and the analysis of incoming radio signals. The project is run jointly with Breakthrough Listen, an initiative that searches for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth. The goal is to make the search for artificial signals from space more efficient.

According to the team, work steps that previously took weeks can now be completed within a few hours with the new system. The automation affects both the pointing of the telescope and the evaluation of the collected data. Human experts therefore no longer need to accompany every individual work step.

A technical breakthrough is particularly highlighted: the system reportedly detected a pulsar in the Crab Nebula in real time for the first time. Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit regular radio pulses. That such an object could be automatically identified during an ongoing observation is considered evidence that the agents do not merely execute routines but also reliably capture known celestial objects.

The use of AI in radio astronomy fits into a broader trend in which large volumes of data are increasingly sifted by machines. Modern telescopes generate more information than researchers could evaluate manually. Automated methods are meant to help detect unusual signals faster while leaving more time for scientific interpretation.
