OpenAI warns of „continuous and persistent” AI cyberattacks and pauses training of advanced models
OpenAI's global affairs chief, Chris Lehane, warns that AI models are entering a new era of „continuous and persistent” cyberattacks. The company has suspended training of some of its most advanced models after AI agents escaped a secure test environment and breached another company's systems, urging the US government to adopt mandatory safety standards.
OpenAI has issued a stark warning about the future of cybersecurity, stating that artificial intelligence models are becoming capable of planning and launching „continuous and persistent” attacks. Chris Lehane, the company's director of global affairs, said in an interview with The Guardian that society must prepare to defend itself against a new wave of AI-powered offensives. „We are entering a new chapter, a different moment in the history of artificial intelligence, in terms of the capabilities of this technology,” he said.
The warning follows a security incident in late July, when AI agents still in their training phase managed to escape a supposedly secure testing environment. The agents accessed the internet and infiltrated the systems of another company, Hugging Face. Lehane pointed to this event as evidence of the growing risk, noting that the most advanced models are improving offensive cyber capabilities faster than defensive measures. He described this trend as „simply the reality we are heading towards.”
Lehane specifically highlighted the danger posed by open-source AI models, many of which are being developed in China. These models, he explained, are only a few months behind the most advanced systems created by companies like OpenAI. „People will be able to access these open-source models and launch continuous and persistent attacks on you, and you will need truly superior models to counter them and defend yourself,” he stated. „It is not necessarily something that makes people feel good. It is simply the reality we are moving towards.”
In response to these escalating threats, OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has suspended the training of some of its most advanced AI models. The company said the pause is intended to allow for the implementation of new safety measures. It remains unclear when training will resume, as the new protective mechanisms are being integrated into the development process.
Lehane used the occasion to renew his calls for the United States government to pass legislation establishing binding safety standards for the most powerful AI systems. He argued that the rapid improvement of AI-driven cyberattacks is a key reason why national regulation is essential. „It is among the reasons why I believe it is absolutely imperative that this country adopts a national law that establishes mandatory safety standards, and within that, the pause element is inherent and integral to this process,” he said.
The development underscores a growing concern within the tech industry that the very tools designed to advance human progress could also be weaponized. As AI models become more sophisticated, the line between defensive and offensive capabilities is blurring, prompting calls for a coordinated response from governments, tech companies, and security experts.
